Have you ever noticed that your mind runs like an automatic computer program?

The mind is a brilliant survival tool, but when we get triggered, it immediately tries to protect us by pulling up old, painful events from the past or projecting fearful scenarios into the future.

For a long time, I didn't realise that our familiar emotions are often just a record of the past.

We gravitate toward those reactions simply because we are used to them.

But through my own journey of mindfulness, I've learned how to step back and watch this programming in action.

Just yesterday, I was driving home and received a difficult phone call. I could instantly sense my mind trying to react with heavy frustration—trying to connect this new problem to old stories. But because of my awareness practice, I didn’t follow it. I acknowledged the pull of the frustration, paused, and gently brought my focus entirely back to the present moment.

And in that exact present moment, behind the wheel of my car?

There was no problem!

It gets easier and easier to step out of autopilot.

On the days when it’s not as smooth, true awareness means having grace for yourself when the old programs try to take over. You are the creator of your mind, not its captive.
